On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Indigenous Women Rise Society (IWRS) joined forces with YWCA for our event: Dating Safe: Train the Trainer. In collaboration with YWCA's Lead Facilitator, Ry Sword Avola, we embarked on a journey to equip First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women with the skills to facilitate and deliver the Dating Safe program within their communities.
Dating Safe is a YWCA program delivered in 8 modules that helps participants build awareness and skills related to dating violence prevention and healthy relationships. The session covered a range of essential topics, including an introduction to healthy relationships, power and stereotypes, communication skills, social media and consent culture, as well as tips and techniques for facilitation.
The response to this program was overwhelming, with almost 1,000 individuals registering for the training. The enthusiasm and commitment from our community underscore the importance of fostering healthy relationships and preventing dating violence.
As we reflect on the success of the Dating Safe event, we acknowledge the collective dedication to empowering communities with the knowledge and skills necessary for promoting respectful and healthy relationships. This initiative is a testament to our enduring commitment to building safer and stronger communities.
We will be hosting a follow up session for folks who are interested in providing this series in their communities. That session will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024.
